Correct use of the “International Taekwon-Do Federation – ITF” name and marks
Over recent months, much misinformation has circulated about the ITF name and logo. Here are the facts, backed by official documents:
📜 1) Austria – Vienna Higher Regional Court (22 Sept 2011).
The Court confirmed the legitimacy and continuity of the ITF registered in Vienna (ZVR 301075445) and dismissed the appeals, thereby upholding the order recognizing the Vienna-based ITF’s lawful governance and continuity with the organization founded in 1966 by Gen. Choi Hong Hi.
🇮🇹 2) Italy – UIBM Opposition Decisions No. 1031/2015 and 1032/2015.
Oppositions filed by Avv. Giuseppe LANOTTE were upheld: trademark filings that reproduced “INTERNATIONAL TAEKWON-DO FEDERATION / ITF” for Class 41 services (martial arts education, events, competitions, etc.) were rejected due to likelihood of confusion with earlier ITF marks.
🇪🇺 3) EU – EUIPO Opposition No. B 3 189 653 (29 Oct 2025).
The EUIPO partially upheld the opposition brought by Ruggiero LANOTTE, represented by Giuseppe LANOTTE: the EUTM application featuring the ITF roundel was rejected for all Class 41 services across the EU.
What this means in practice
Only the Vienna ITF — in Italy, through FITSPORT Italia — is legally entitled to use the ITF marks for sports and institutional activities (Class 41).

Negli ultimi mesi sono circolate molte informazioni errate sul nome e sul logo ITF. Ecco i fatti, con i riferimenti ufficiali:
📜 1) Austria – Corte Superiore di Vienna (22 settembre 2011).
La Corte ha confermato la legittimità e la continuità dell’ITF con sede a Vienna (ZVR 301075445), rigettando i reclami e mantenendo ferma l’ordinanza che riconosce la continuità con l’organizzazione fondata nel 1966 dal Gen. Choi Hong Hi.
🇮🇹 2) Italia – UIBM, decisioni di opposizione n. 1031/2015 e n. 1032/2015.
Accolte le opposizioni proposte dall’Avv. Giuseppe LANOTTE: sono state respinte domande di marchio che riproducevano “INTERNATIONAL TAEKWON-DO FEDERATION / ITF” per i servizi di classe 41 (formazione, eventi, competizioni, arti marziali), per rischio di confusione con marchi ITF anteriori.
🇪🇺 3) UE – EUIPO, Opposizione n. B 3 189 653 (29 ottobre 2025).
EUIPO ha parzialmente accolto l’opposizione di Ruggiero LANOTTE, rappresentato da Giuseppe LANOTTE: la domanda di marchio UE con il “roundel” ITF è stata rigettata per tutti i servizi di classe 41 nell’Unione.
In concreto
In Italia, solo l’ITF di Vienna — tramite FITSPORT Italia — può legittimamente utilizzare i marchi ITF per attività sportive e istituzionali (classe 41).
